AMR Timeshare Push

I stayed at Dreams Vista and now at Secrets Akumal and oh my god the push for timeshare presentation is seriously so off putting.

At the Dreams, they tried to sell it off as an elite benefit. They called us early in the morning and told us to go to the preferred club to claim our Hyatt member reward. There were some coupons you could use sure, but it was kind of along the lines of $10 off a bottle of premium wine (they were usually $100+), but really it was just a ploy to tell us about the timeshare presentation. As soon as they ask us to sign this “receipt of coupon form” that for some reason required us to put down our occupation, I knew what they were trying to do, and I politely told the guy that we don’t want to do a timeshare presentation. He persisted and basically ignored me. I had to become increasingly more firm and said, please stop telling us about the free things we can get, we are not interested in doing a presentation. His demeanor completely changed and acted like I was being really rude to him. Btw, I didn’t raise my voice, I simply rejected his timeshare offer. This all happened in the preferred club, which really rubbed me the wrong way. It felt like we were being punished for being globalist.

The next day when we were trying to get to breakfast, someone in the hallway literally ran up to us and started interrogating us “did you get your welcome coupons” “have you booked any extras with us”, etc. Once again, we had to tell this guy multiple times that we are not interested before he would leave us alone. During our short two night stay, the hotel hasseled us three separate times about timeshare presentations.

Now fast forward to the Secret Akumal check in, this really friendly lady took us to the preferred club to check in. At first she seemed to just be making friendly conversation, but eventually, she started asking me whether I enjoyed massages or had booked any excursions. Alarm bells start ringing. Sure enough, after we checked in, she came over with those same coupons, and that’s when I saw her name tag “vip services”. I again firmly told her that I’m not interested. She tried to say that the coupons were unrelated, but it was obvious at this point where it was going. Same as the guy at Dreams, her demeanor completely changed and acted really offended that I rejected her. We are at this one for two nights also, I really hope they don’t hassle us the same way they did at Dreams.

I think it’s totally fine to offer a timeshare presentation at check in, but respect the customer when they refuse the offer. I’ve stayed at other hyatts that did this but NO ONE has been as rude as these AMR resort people. I was especially annoyed that they marketed these things as some kind of benefit to preferred members. People come to all inclusive resorts to relax, at least give them the option to opt out without being harassed in the hall way. It was so uncomfortable.

Anyone else have a similar experience?
