mindset shift as a hairstylist
I have been in the industry for over 15 years now and as I get older, I really am looking at my future with more clarity and determination to not just rely on my hair income. Several years ago we started buying real estate, stocks and other income producing assets and I am so glad we started investing early. I typically only read fiction but my husband encouraged me to read a non-fiction book that really changed my entire mindset. It got me feeling extremely inspired and I wanted to share it with you all.
The book is called The Almanac of Naval Ravikant (I know super weird), and it completely changed how I think about success as a hairstylist. If you’re feeling stuck or just want to level up your mindset, these takeaways might help. First, your unique skill is your superpower. If anyone can be trained to do it, it’s not your magic. The most successful stylists lean into what makes them different—whether it’s their artistry, the way they connect with clients, or their niche specialty. That’s what builds a thriving business. Next, accountability is everything. If you’re waiting for clients to come to you, you’re an employee of your own business. But if you’re actively attracting and retaining them, you’re a CEO. Pricing, marketing, and client experience are all in your control, and the more ownership you take, the more financial freedom you’ll have. Truly connect with your clients and make yourself irreplaceable. Real wealth comes from ownership. Working commission forever won’t make you rich—equity will. Whether it’s renting a booth, owning a salon suite, selling retail, or creating digital products, you need something that pays you beyond the hours you work. Be a producer, not just a consumer. Leverage is also key. If you want to scale without working more hours, you have to work smarter—raise your prices, hire an assistant, or use social media strategically. Your Instagram and TikTok are free marketing machines, so why not use them to bring in clients while you sleep? Lastly, success isn’t about overnight wins—it’s about playing the long game. The stylists who stay consistent, invest wisely, and think long-term always come out on top. Instead of just focusing on making quick cash, think about how to make your money work for you. You’re not just a hairstylist—you’re a business owner, a brand, and a wealth builder. Would love to hear your thoughts on this!
