I am drained.
I never post. But I need advice. I’m just SO tired of taking in everyone’s emotions all day. I’m so tired of the notion that we are therapists. We’re not. And it’s embarrassing that other hairdressers compare themselves to therapists. But I also think that it gives clients the idea that it’s ok to divulge all of their issues onto us during every appointment.
I have clients that cry in my chair. One cried recently about how her partner couldn’t get a surgery covered by insurance for his penis to be able to work again! I’m just baffled by the things people will say. The other day a client talked through her entire appointment about how her husband only asked for an x% raise when he was supposed to ask for a y% raise. I live in a pretty wealthy area and I’m not that wealthy area and I’m not wealthy so a lot of these people’s problems just feel so minuscule compared to mine. And people are entitled to their emotions. But don’t dump it all on me. And there are a lot of things that people bring up that are SO HEAVY. But I just am so tired of taking it all in. Someone today who was having a hard time finding a spot that worked with my availability for a bang trim (🙃 shoulda booked in advance) felt the need to tell me the reason her availability was limited was bc she had a family member pass. I’ve done this girl’s hair once. I’m just tired of feeling like I have to take in people’s shit all the time.
So my question is, how do y’all deal with this?? Do I need to go to therapy? Has that helped any of you with this specific problem? Or is there a certain phrase you have to politely give people the hint that they’re oversharing? Or a way you act?
I love this industry. I’m in a suite so it’s just me and my client. I’m just tired.
Thanks in advance. ❤️❤️
