Friend Was Hit With a Golf Ball

I was on the course with a few friends earlier today when our buddy was absolutely smoked by a worm burner from some high handicapper. Out of instinct, we took off immediately, but it did not look good. Our friend was flapping around for a moment and then went still. Can the golfer be held liable?
