Rhaegar would have been a terrible King
A good king must be wise and this little dweeb was anything but. He is equally to blame for his family's destruction as his father. The tourney at Harenhal? C'mon huh? This numbnut publicly exposes his love for the betrothed Lyanna Stark getting two great houses pissed off in one foul swoop. (3 if you count humiliating the Martell's) A king that puts his emotions before that of his subjects is a terrible King.
(On a side note let's finally admit Rhaegar is a good warrior. He "won" the tourney at Harenhal. He definitely totally beat Arthur Dane and Barristan Selmy in one day. I'm sure knocking the mad king's son on his ass right in front of him would go over well for you. )
A good king must be a good commander. Rhaegar died in his first battle. He had a much larger force with some of the greatest warrior's of all time fighting with him and he still bungled it. The Greyjoy rebellion probably would have taken this noob out.
So what positives does this man have? He's a terrible commander, stupid, and selfish. Say what you want about Robert but he was a good commander who demanded respect and was fair to the great houses. (He didn't even kill Balon Greyjoy) Rhaegar was a total punk and would have been yet another shit Targ King.
