Career change advice
Hello,
I’m looking for a bit of advice about a career change into the forestry field. A little bit of background, I have a bachelors degree in wildlife and conservation biology and while working on that was able to take some pertinent classes such as forest ecology, wildlife habitats, forest entomology, field methods etc. After graduating I worked one seasonal position in the natural resources field before ultimately starting a career in something totally different. Fast forward to today, and while my job pays the bills and provides well, I am absolutely miserable doing what I’m doing now. I’m looking to make the leap to forestry and am wondering if there are any recommendations on where to start, i.e. jobs, certifications etc. With my current work schedule a masters degree is probably not going to happen unfortunately. I applied last year to a couple of “reach” positions in the forestry field just to see where I stood and received one offer back for a position running a chainsaw on a crew. While ideally I’d like to avoid that I’m also not above cutting my teeth in a position like that in order to get into the industry. I’ve seen posts on this thread before about people working in this field essentially working in the woods some of the time and able to bring their dogs and honestly that sounds like the dream (I know there is WAY more to it than this). I think I’m leaning towards the private side of things because I’m unwilling to relocate from my home in NH. I think end goal would be a position helping land owners manage for wildlife habitat. Any and all input would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks!
