Argument for selecting a temporary "definitive" version for modding
Most of this is copied from a comment I left on a semi-related post asking to ignore Mojang entirely, but I feel like there's a better way of approaching it
It was stated that players may not see the benefits to moving up minor iterations, but the modders have improved QOL due to backend implementations by Mojang. Creating the argument that players should move version to make modding easier for modders.
From a player perspective though, how does this make any sense?
Sure 1.22 might add some great backend tweaks for modders, but for players they have to give up all their favourites all over again just to get the newest stuff with no real improvement on their gameplay
Idk how to not sound crazy entitled saying this, but if modders want players to play their mod, would it not make sense to suit their needs instead of asking everyone to move on to play their new thing?
"Ditch everything you have because I'm only releasing on the next version" is gonna be a tough sell compared to "I've added new stuff to the version where you have everything else"
Big companies don't release a new games console every year for the same reason, they'd simply never sell any games if they expected everyone to constantly jump platform, that stuff can wait a few years to allow the platform to mature.
I just think back to 1.7's crazy wealth of content, and in extension to that 1.12's catalogue with bonus performance fixes, we can't have that if each minor iteration gets fragments of the whole catalogue of mods out there.
I get it that it's better for modders, but the outcome depends on who modders are making their content for, the players, or themselves?
Both are valid answers, but if the first answer is given then making everyone jump ship each update is the wrong approach.
The community may be too fragmented to have any drive to decide anything concrete, but some day I'd like to see an agreement perhaps, that we'll stick to "X version" for a period of time before jumping a few versions forwards,
Because man is it annoying to find all sorts of mods fragmented between versions, and I feel mods are hurting their own success by being exclusive to versions less people want to play.
