I agree on Raheem not calling the timeout.
You see a defensive personnel you like, you want to keep them on the field at all costs. It’s a chess game and these coaches study the opponents personnel all week and more. Raheem saw something he liked and made a decision. I don’t fault him one bit and here’s why.
In hindsight of course you want to call the timeout, after you know it didn’t work. But in reality, if Penix hits Mooney in stride, Mooney is either out at the opponents 32 or even better - he’s making Quan Martin miss and were even closer. Either way, Riley is making that game winner from that distance.
The truth is Penix missed too many open throws. He had a couple or more that were sure touchdowns. Can you really blame him, though? I don’t think so. We know he can make those throws, but evidently he and receivers haven’t had enough reps - that I do blame on Raheem with the Kirk situation and also not playing Penix the entire preseason.
We did see a lot of good out of Penix, though. Especially the game-tying throw to big goofy. As far as Raheem, I don’t fault him for being aggressive - it was the right call. It’s only the wrong call because it didn’t work and now the media has something to blow out of proportion. For us fans, it hurts either way. We’re going to find a way to blame something, that’s just how it goes. We got a lot to look forward to next year. We’ll be talking about offseason stuff before we know it.
