Is DW Origin not for me?

Hi all. I have played DW since I was a child. My favourites are definitely DW 4 and 5. My favourite part of DW is that I can play as one for the generals and roleplay them in their battles. Since Origin focuses on an original new character and you can only “partner” with a few characters in game and use them, is Origin not for me? How do you guys feel about this change? Honestly, it is such a big turn off for me knowing I can’t play as those historical characters.
