Purchasing upgrades with points & Delta AMEX

I've got the DELTA amex and I know if I book a flight with points I can get the 15% off. My question is does that 15% apply when purchasing upgrades with points IE C+ to First Class?

I'm assuming it doesn't which will always make my best use of points to purchase the ticket initially but just wanted to double check.
