Storage Unit Dilemma

When we moved to the state we live in, the moving company packed all our stuff and we rented a storage unit for all the extra things. Then over the years, when that got full we rented a secondary unit. We have had these units for 8 plus years now and the fees go up every year and are out of control.

I have since gone through a major decluttering journey and I don't keep anything extra I don't need. There's nothing I want from these storage units, but there may be personal information I need to look through since it was packed so long ago by other people.

We live about 45 minutes away and we only have one car. So my husband would need to basically tackle this on his own and rent a car/truck. I'm not sure if renting a u haul and having my husband just load it up and drive it to a dump is our most cost effective option or if I'd be allowed to rent a dumpster at the actual facility. I know there's a giant window AC unit in there, a bunch of large Christmas trees - but I don't think there's any furniture.

We have been putting this off forever because it seems so complicated but at $400 a month, soon to be more - it is just really gotten out of control to store things we haven't seen in 5 plus years and just don't have any desire to keep. Logistically, it just seems hard to do. Junk removal services were quoting over $1500 and we'd still need to go through the items first.
