A poetically moving drama
Ryusuke Hamaguchi's film is one steeped in intertextuality, as the main character of Yusuke looks to adapt Anton Chekhov's "Uncle Vanya" into a stage play. Told through wonderful cinematography and emotionally understated performances, this tale of grief, art, isolation, resentment, truth vs. lies, and the search for solace make for a great 3-hour journey. Acting as one of the best films of the 2020s so far, it's an excellent example of art imitating life.
