Overture for Orchestra

Program Notes:

This work weaves together Chinese, Celtic, and American folk influences through six recurring
themes: Fanfare, Mystic, Celebration, Noble, Dream, and Wind. Rather than following a strict
narrative, the piece invites listeners on a journey through a series of emotional landscapes, with
themes reappearing in varied forms, enriching the musical dialogue.
The "Fanfare" theme introduces the piece with energy, while the "Mystic Theme" offers
moments of reflection and depth. The "Celebration" themes, both A and B, capture the essence
of joy and communal spirit, reflecting the work's folk inspirations. The "Noble Theme" adds a
touch of dignity and solemnity, contrasting with the introspective "Dream Theme," which allows
for a moment of contemplation. Finally, the "Wind Theme" encapsulates the piece’s underlying
momentum and change as it is set against the backdrop of the "Mystic Theme."
When I approached this work, I did not intend for it to be programmatic. Rather, I wanted to
encourage listeners to explore their own interpretations and connections as the themes intertwine
and evolve, offering a personal journey through the music. This work reflects not just a blend of
musical traditions, but a celebration of the varied emotional experiences they evoke and bring to
each unique person.
