General tips for Amex: * Amex points can be converted to Avios where you should be able to get 1p or more per point, meaning 30K points are worth £300. If you’re not up for jumping through the hoops of finding valuable business class Avios redemptions or just don’t care for travel, you can convert the points to Nectar points with a value of 0.5p per point, meaning 30K points are worth £150. * They tend to be more lenient when it comes to people with shorter tenures in the UK, eg 2 years of address history can be plenty. Especially if your salary is higher than average. Do the eligibility checker to see if you’re likely to get a card, no hard credit checks. * When you’re getting close to the end of your card year, before you pay the yearly card fee, contact support and tell them that you’re going through your finances and trying to decide if it’s worth keeping the card. They are likely to offer you a retention reward that covers the cost of the card. * Amex still has pro-rata refunds, so signing up and earning a bonus and then cancelling or downgrading the card to get most of your money back is still possible, although they have said that they are planning to remove it. No set date yet. * One additional card holder is free and they usually pay you some extra Amex points for the first one. Additional card holders also receive benefits like travel insurance.
