People 40yr-old and above, especially individual contributor in high tech, are you having a hard time finding a job? Even if you are willing to take less?

I've seen at least 8 layoffs in my 20+ years career, that's like about once every 3 years. Fortunately I have not been affected so far. Also it seems that older employees got disproportionately affected. No doubt more layoffs to come, so as someone who is now in their 40's, I am preparing myself mentally (and financially) for this.

Where we are at now financially, I still need to work for at least another 12-15 years. But if I end up not finding comparable jobs at my level, I am willing to take less just to get by until my kids finish college.

Just want to gauge the current situation is. I'm trying not to move out of the Bay Area, but at the end if I have to then I will. Thanks!
