I consider myself an Obsidian super fan. I've played all of the canonical games, and I love every single one of them.

However, starting up Avowed, I am not really having fun.

The game looks great, even if they have perhaps made a world that looks a bit too grand. Coming off KCD2 it's very jarring. The concept of playing a character with mysterious fungus growths is also interesting.

But there is a lot I don't like. It is much more game-y than I would have liked. The combat is busy and cartoony. It reminds me most of all of the DOOM revival games. The shining loot makes me feel like I am super Mario collecting stars. First person open world games just feel better with a more grounded and less arcad-y or MMO-y presentation. The game-y-ness makes it so much less immersive.

The tone is also very light hearted. I thought this game would be kind of like Torment or Disco, where you play a person who shocks people with their horrible visage. I look absolutely stunning, by the way, but I have fungi sprouting out of my eye sockets. Even in a world where godlikes are a thing, I look more terrifying than most, yet people don't react to me appropriately.

They even tell me that they can easily tell me apart from those affected by the dreamscourge. Fucking how? I look several times as worse than those poor sods, even if I look three times as fabulous—I matched my hair to my growth. It looks killer.

I think that if they made it a little bit gritter, I'd enjoy it a lot more. I won't give up. They've never let me down before. KOTOR2, NWN2, Mask of the Betrayer, Alpha Protocol, Tyranny and Pentiment—they've never let me down before.

How are everyone else faring?
