Anybody a little disappointed in how we used our CL qualification in the summer transfer window?

After finally achieving CL qualification which we coveted for many many years, I was really hoping we would kick on and use it to attract some top class talent in the hopes of establishing our selves there.

I know reality isn’t as simple as that. PSR especially makes things very difficult for us. But at the time our transfers were quite underwhelming, and in hindsight even more so. Considering it would take a major upswing in form to snatch a top 5 place and CL qualification this season.

In:

  • Onana (given he wanted to leave Everton and they needed to sell, I don’t think CL qualification was the deciding factor)

  • Maatsen (barely played)

  • Philogene (already sold to Ipswich after failing to impress the manager enough)

  • Barkley (he’s fine but not someone you need CL to attract)

Out:

  • Diaby (sorely missing his pace and quick actions)

  • Douglas Luiz (this deal was good for nobody)

Maybe CL qualification doesn’t mean much anymore in terms of appealing to players, and I’m living in the past. But anybody else feel the same?
