USB powered 6TB music storage and other cheap components in your system.

For starters, I just maxed out my 4TB drive (plus backup drive) and went searching for a larger replacement. I love these small USB powered drives. They are small, fast and don’t require AC power.

They have topped out at 5TB for some time, but somehow (voodoo?) there are a couple of 6TB products. These are advertised as gaming drives with 7200 rpm platters and 130mb/s read speeds (way fast enough even for the largest music files such as DSD512.

The metallic pink paint is not for everyone, but I love it. These drives are normally just BLACK. They are even called WD Black. I think the color is meant to be BLACKPINK. 😉 IYKYK

15 hours to move 4TB across from old 4TB to new 6TB BLACKPINK. Let’s go!

Also, recently added the USB switcher in the photo. As part of a very expensive system, it seems like pure sacrilege. But hear me out. I have two devices streaming music. Mac Mini (music and movies) and iFi Zen Streamer (music only). The Mac only has USB output and the iFi has several options. After extensive listening, the USB from the iFi sounds better than any of the other options.

My DAC has a single USB input. So I thought I would try a USB switch to see if it was feasible. I can hear ZERO difference with the signal passing through the switch.

Here’s the rub, the switch cost only $12! It just FEELS wrong to be using it. SHAMEFUL. 😂

What is the cheapest component in your system and do you feel like it’s just wrong (even if it sounds perfect!) ?
