Why do religious people ignore scientific evidence that contradicts their beliefs?

As someone raised in a deeply religious family, I’ve noticed religious people often use selective perception - accepting science that fits their beliefs while rejecting what doesn’t. They’ll use smartphones and modern medicine, but deny evolution.

I think it comes down to emotional investment and fear. When you’ve built your entire worldview and identity around religious beliefs, evidence that threatens those beliefs feels like a personal attack. It’s easier to dismiss the evidence than question core beliefs that give life meaning.

Plus, many religious communities discourage questioning - it’s seen as lack of faith. They’re taught from childhood that doubting leads to eternal punishment. That’s powerful psychological conditioning.

The real question is: can we bridge this gap between science and religion? Or will tribalism and cognitive dissonance always win?

Would love to hear others’ experiences with this, especially those who’ve managed to reconcile faith and science.
