Should I switch dealerships?
My buddy works at Honda next door and he said there’s a position available and I pretty much already have the job they only have 8 salespeople and are a smaller lot. I currently work at a Toyota dealer and we are a small lot as well (roughly 80-110 new cars at any point and time) but we have 25 salespeople and average 150-170 cars a month. I’ve consistently been making 3-6k a month off 7-10 cars which I honestly think is abysmal. The managers here aren’t really closers they just come out and discount vehicles till the customers say yes. The managers at Honda are great closers and they average 6k in gross on their deals and have a closing ratio of 60%-70% and it’s all round just a chiller atmosphere over there- it’s not a volume store so there no stress from hitting their number and the managers don’t take things out on the salespeople.
If a customer doesn’t buy a car here at Toyota the manager immediately blame the salesman and say they messed up and it’s frustrating because even though I’ve been in the business 8 months, I’m consistent with my number and I get good gross (whenever I don’t get a manager TO). It feels like the managers punish my wallet by asking for a TO and they care more about hitting their number then making sure their people get paid, we have spiff bonuses on units but if we don’t sell 7 New cars they take them away.
Basically the managers at Honda make sure you make good money and people don’t waste your time, they are always super involved and it’s a good atmosphere co-worker wise. The only thing is they slam people in negotiations to make sure we make as much money as possible and will sweep people out if they think the customer is just wasting time
Managers at Toyota feel like they care more about their numbera their employees making good money, and they chastise everyone if they don’t make a car deal. My buddy has been in the business a few years and he says they are lazy and ridiculous with how they treat everyone. They also want you to waste time, if a customer is adamant they aren’t going to do anything today they want you to do the full process with them and multiple times I’ve had customers who I spend hours with and they don’t change their mind at all but if I try to just get them out quickly I get yelled at by the managers. But they are decent in the fact they don’t take advantage of people and always try to do right by the customer and overall have good morals.
