Fahrerlaubnisbehörde - how to proceed after passing the practical driving exam?
Solved
After trying a lot to find an appointment via the website, I tried the suggestion of sending an email to [[email protected]](mailto:[email protected]) asking for a express pickup, since I live near this office. I sent the e-mail last evening (text generate by ChatGPT), and already got an answer this morning to pick it up at the beginning of January, luckly during my lunch break. Not sure if I will need to pay the €8 because I asked the express pick up, but I will bring an EC card.
I just passed my practical driving exam. I still have my Brazilian driving license, and the examiner gave me a red paper that allows me to drive in Germany for three months. My driving school provided me with the contact information for the Fahrerlaubnisbehörde and suggested I reach out to them, mentioning that I could speak in English.
Unfortunately, I couldn’t communicate in English. I tried using my limited German, but the first time I called, the person hung up on me. When I called again and carefully tried explaining in German how I should proceed, the treatment was very rude. So now, I’m just looking for guidance on how to move forward.
The office is quite close to my home (11 minutes by bike), and my driving school advised either:
- Sending my Brazilian driving license by post with tracking and confirmation of receipt, or
- Going directly to the office early in the morning without an appointment to hand in my Brazilian license. They mentioned that, in such cases, they may accommodate walk-ins.
Since I’ve already had documents lost by the Bürgeramt during this process (I even had to pay the fees twice!), I’d prefer to go in person. However, I’d appreciate advice on whether it’s okay to just show up early one morning this week (around 7:30 AM) and finalize this last step.
How did you handle this? Did you book an appointment online beforehand?
P. S. I checked their website, and while it seems possible to book an appointment, there are several options listed, which I find confusing. Additionally, all the links for booking seem to be under maintenance.
