AGP in Rock: Axl Rose is Crypto AGP
I can confidently say that many rock artists, especially from the 80s, displayed signs of AGP (autogynephilia). A good example of this would be Steven Tyler from Aerosmith or Axl Rose from Guns N' Roses.
Take Axl Rose, for instance. While he wasn’t transgender, I’ve noticed elements of AGP in his performances during the 80s. He wore makeup, moved with a feminine flair, had long hair, and sometimes even dressed in women’s clothing. His high-pitched voice and occasional moans sounded almost like a woman’s, and this comfort with femininity points to AGP, in my opinion. Other rockers with long hair and makeup didn’t embody that uniquely feminine energy in the same way.
The term "androgynous" often gets thrown around—from Steven Tyler to David Bowie, they’re all labeled as “androgynous,” but I think this is inaccurate. David Bowie might genuinely have an androgynous persona, but Steven Tyler feels more AGP to me. He doesn’t just wear makeup and have long hair—his gestures, painted nails, and even the way he moans while singing reflect a desire to embody aspects of femininity.
The 80s rock scene really gave male singers space to be what I’d call “crypto AGP.”
Who are some other artists you think might fit this “crypto AGP” mold?
