American Eagle gift card with the Aerie name?

I want to purchase an American Eagle gift card for someone, but since there's no store near me, I was told that I can purchase an Aerie gift card and the person I give it to can use this at any American Eagle store or use it to order clothing on American Eagle's website. Is this true? It seems so strange that you have to buy a gift card with a totally different store name? Anyway, please advise if what I was told is accurate. Thanks.
