Are AA miles a sham?

Got 60K miles promotion. Looked at getting round trip from OKC to LV. AA.com said it would take all 60k plus $1100. The tickets ended up being $700 and we only got 500 miles for the purchase.
Promotion said it would be worth multiple domestic round trips.
