Passport Check with Carry-on Baggage Only

I will be flying on an international flight departing Canada to Japan. Since I will have carry-on baggage only, I won't be going to the check-in counter. As such, my passport won't be checked there. I will be going straight to security and then my gate. Therefore, will the only passport check be at the gate before I board?
