Disappointed.
So first off, I’ve always thought the character Travis was kinda fun and a testament to Sheridan’s sense of humor. Writing himself into the show seemed kinda goofy and ironic. It was just a small secondary character, almost comedic relief. After tonight I genuinely think he might just be a narcissist. Not only injecting himself into the climax of the story, but to spend so much valuable screen time in what appears to be the second to last episode on showcasing what a fun, jacked, great cowboy he is while being surrounded by beautiful women was fucking unbelievable. It did absolutely nothing for the storyline. My jaw was on the floor on how nearly 20% of this episode was devoted to that. Genuinely in shock at what a slap in the face to fans that was.
At first I gave the benefit of the doubt about the Colby subplot, and assumed it was used as a vehicle to drive the Carter/family arc to its head. I’m starting to think Sheridan just couldn’t figure out a way to drag out 5+ episodes of the Jamie, murder investigation, Market Equities etc and all this is just filler. Even the bar scene with Beth. Earlier in the show it was a little more vague when she guessed the life story of guys hitting on her, and now it’s just the most unrealistic detailed assumptions that of course are implied as being spot on. This show is just turning into a cartoon of itself.
We could have had 6 episodes of drama with Jamie on the run (metaphorically or literally) from the law and Beth, not knowing which one would get him first. We could have had hours of the murder investigation into John’s death, behind the scenes of digging into Sarah Atwood and Market Equities possible involvement. We could have had a heated Rip going on a warpath to avenge John, that he was so loyal to his entire life. Instead we get long drawn out marketing of 6666 and Bosque Ranch, Colby’s death, Tate saying “get a room” 37 times, and more cutting montage/concert.
I’m so unbelievably disappointed at how much potential there was with John’s sudden death and how insanely dramatic and exciting the climax to the story could have been. I’ve loved this show through thick and thin, and this last season is so fucking terrible.
