How does one play as a second line TD?

I am currently starting the T28 Prototype and its a very big switch from the t25/2, Ive been told to play like a second line heavy but im not sure what that means. How do I trade fire without getting hit with the damage? Should I use my camo and sit at the back or just follow heavies wherever they go?
