Newsletter Form Sign up Hack/Spam

Company website has a form in the footer that has been getting bombarded by SPAM signups in the past few days, around 40-50 since Friday. Form is just Name and Email fields and they will use the same email over and over with a different jumbled up name. Could this be an attempt at a hack somehow? Not sure how someone could with this method but just curious if anyone has had this happen? Thanks.
