Technephandi vs Threat Null (I said Threat Null, so SPOILERS, obviously)
So, in one corner, M20 is big on the idea that Control is basically a Nephandic front organization pull the rest of the Union's puppet strings. There have been a few allusions to an ominous "restructuring" that will purge the more idealistic and reasonable elements of the Union (i.e. those propounded in the Revised Conbooks) and return it to the implacable evil monolith it was circa 1e.
In the other corner, a bunch of the muckety-mucks among 4/5 of the Conventions have basically become half-spirit Borg and are fighting a scorched-earth war against the Void Engineers to return to Earth and do a bunch of Weaver stuff or whatever.
Assuming that they're both still canon at the same time, (which, granted, we won't know for sure until Technocracy: Reloaded comes out) do they know about eachother? Because it strikes me that a full scale Nephandic power play would probably return the Union to a hardline pro-Pogrom, pro-Conditioning stance. The lack of Conditioning for the Nulls to access and the ability to ally with RD when necessary happens to also be the only thing that allows the Voiders to hold the line against Threat Null, so a Union-wide resumption of those policies would basically be giving the Nulls the go-ahead to take over the world, which would probably run counter to the Fallen's agenda. (It's hard to cause despair on a global hive mind. Not impossible, probably, but letting it happen would not be doing them any favors).
From this, I basically see two scenarios:
The Nephs know about Threat Null and let the Void Engineers do their thing while trying to subtly corrupt Earth from within. This lets them maintain their hold over the Union while dealing with the greatest external threat to their plans and the Convention most likely to realize what they're trying to pull and usher in actual reforms in one fell swoop.
The Nephs don't know about Threat Null, usher in sweeping changes that completely neuter the VE's ability to fight Threat Null and get egg on their faces when the Autopolitans jump in and start assimilating people. This leads to the Nephandi having to go on the defensive, maybe even going so far as to need to reconcile (however temporarily) with the reformists they kicked out or even the Traditions or Crafts in order to ensure that they can corrupt the Tellurian their way, thank you very much.
I actually think these could both make for some interesting campaign backdrops. Thoughts?
