60+ Yrs | compound lift maxes
I turned 60 in August; been religious about building muscle & strength—or trying—since I picked up the Trainer+ last Feb (2024).
I’m not a native lifter, never have been, so I think I’m starting to hit 3RM neuromuscular limits; at least I think so, as muscles are quivering hard for a good while, and getting a bit more defined w a bit if vascular upper body, though still have 40 lbs to drop.
My question is for older Redditors who are using Trainer+ as their primary. What kind of limits can/should I be able to expect to push for 3RM in the big compounds & how many years have you been weight training to get there? I’ve read all these references as to where I should be for age (60) & weight (250lbs and dropping 1lb /week —mostly fat per DEXA—for past 6 months). The numbers are all over the place —body weight (bench), x 1.5 (squat), x2 (DL) —these seem far from where I am - but I’m a decently healthy 60, albeit dense/chunky
My lower body feels like it still has 10-30lbs room to run but my upper is super weak by compare Low Bar Squats: 119 per cable (238) DL: 130 per cable (260) Bench: 72 per cable (144)
So are the BW/x1.5/x2 or more reasonable targets for my age? How should I think about those? I think I’m past newbie gains, but maybe not - progressive overload is down to maybe 2-4lbs a week; less on bench which if I go higher, losing form - so it’s kinda static (a bit discouraging)
I was a cardio athlete all my life til this past year, switching to weight centric + protein prioritized.
Welcome any/all input. Thank you!
