Jobs pathways and career development

Hey everyone ,

I moved here last year and got a job in a credit union. I previously worked in an entry level position in a bank in Europe and I also have my degree.

I’m confused by how career development works here. In my previous job in Europe they advised me if I got a specific diploma well then I could work my way up the ladder and get promotions which I had seen others do so I know this was true.

However at my current job there seems to be no roadmap or guide on how to get a promotion. I’m on a team that had its staffed reduced by layoffs and I’m a top performer. Anytime I ask about career advancement I’m told to try out LinkedIn courses. To me these courses are useless and would never get me hired or promoted somewhere. There is also no previous people who have gotten promoted in my company just by doing these courses.

I am really hungry for more work and ambitious and want to learn but it feels like the company here couldn’t care about career development. I have tried applying to other places but the job market here feels very messed up. In Europe I was getting job offers every month while here I apply to 100 jobs and receive maybe 1 or 2 responses. The companies that do respond offer half my wage and set me back in my career by going into part time entry level work.

Not sure if this is the normal situation here just looking to open a conversation , thank-you.
