Peroneal Tendon Strain as an Experienced Runner
Peroneal tendon strains are somewhat common for new runners pushing themselves too much too fast.
I'm wondering if anyone ever was maintaining decent mileage pain free, and pushed themselves during an isolated event and ended up straining their peroneal tendon?
Context: 1,000 miles for 2024. Ran a marathon in October 2024, and slowed down after. Through December of 2024, I was steadily increasing mileage and maintaining at 30 miles per week. December 30th, I needed 20 miles to get to 1,000 miles for the year.
I said screw it, and sent it to 30 miles. During my run near 27 miles, my peroneal tendon was acting up. I had never experienced the pain before. I pushed through to finish, and it was very sore, but not painful.
It's healed nicely over the last 2 weeks and I can walk without any notice of pain or discomfort. Feels 99% normal, and the peroneal gets a little sore after about 3 miles of near tempo pace.
My plan is to just keep running at Z2 easy pace until the tendon starts to become noticable, then stop, and rest for a day, then run again. I engage in a few other sports that are good cross training for my tendons such as rock climbing and cycling.
For this reason, I don't believe it was an inadequate strength in my tendons, just too much mileage on too little training.
Does anyone have any thoughts on that? Or am I the only one who pushed the envelope too much too fast? /s
Thanks.
