For those who played the Beta ...

Is there a way to turn normal white gear into a resource? I have almost the item cap of 500 but most is just white gear that I'll never use. Should I hold onto so I can convert into an item later or do you just toss these? Or perhaps the Beta didn't have a feature like that?
