Stephen is a not a psychopath.
He’s a severe narcissist, or at most, a sociopath. Here’s are the differences…
-psychopaths are that way from birth (biology), narcissists are a product of their environment (nurture or lack thereof, which we see with his mom)
-he’s concerned with his social image and tries to keep his real self hidden, but shows some guilt and shame
-he showed fear and remorse initially during the car accident, but thought about how it’d affect him (his social image, his awareness of rules/crimes) and moved Macy to the driver’s seat
-we see he truly cares about Sadie
-need for excessive admiration, wanting to be the “good friend” for the guys
-unrealistic fantasies of power and money- growing up poor to becoming a lawyer
-he has a few close relationships and “loves” Lucy and Diana in a way only narcissists can (cares more about what they can do for him and how they make him feel than true love)
-his ego gets butt hurt a lot, like when he finds out about Evan and Lucy, Leo and Lucy, Diana and Wrigley, because he sees them as his property and being shown up by other men brings out his extreme insecurity (of course he still uses it as leverage against Diana and Evan)
Charles Manson, Ted Bundy, and Jeffrey Dahmer are psychopaths. Stephen is not and I don’t think that term should be thrown around. Take it from a therapist and someone who’s dated two narcissists.
