Skeleton Crew Appreciation Post
My fiancé and I weren’t even planning to watch this, but we have loved it so far. It’s just a nice, fresh Star Wars story. It just feels like classic Star Wars if that makes sense. The character and set designs have been amazing so far (we have only watched the first three episodes).
The space station they visit in episode two reminds me of Tortuga from PotC. The PotC wiki describes Tortuga as “Dangerous, boisterous, drunken, and bawdy, Tortuga was pirate heaven.” Which seems pretty similar to the station in Skeleton Crew. Along with that, I love how they made the inside of the ship feel like an old pirate ship. The skeletons in the hall way killed by knives/swords rather than blasters, the dust and cobwebs all over the ship, and even the hats that Wim and Neel find.
As for character design, it feels like the creators of the show sat down and committed real time and effort into creating these characters. SM-33 is the prime example. First of all, I learned this morning that his name is a nod to Mr. Smee from Peter Pan (SM33 = SMEE). His raspy English voice reminds me of characters like Captain Barbosa from the PotC franchise. Then you have the missing eye unit which looks like an eye patch, and the way he walks makes him look like he has a peg leg.
This kind of effort and intentionality just makes Star Wars better.
