Digging on Georgia Avenue/Gas Leak

There was a gas leak near Georgia Avenue and Cameron a few days ago, I was not surprised because out of nowhere I noticed they were doing construction in front of new building and they were digging pretty deep. Whatever was being done , had to stop ,but now the area has been left and work incomplete. Does anyone know why they were digging to begin with and what is the plan to finish and close up the area. I couldn't find any information online and the apartment just said work is on hold. I feel better when the hole in the ground is closed.
