in store return

i received a "milk hydro setting spray" full size as a gift. i used it maybe twice and the pump is now clogged i tried all the online tricks and it won't work. i tried to exchange it instore or get instore credit and my sephora won't help at all without a reciept they paid cash and the person didn't use rewards they dont shop there my store basically said to trash the $38 defective product do i have any options? that is crazy to me.
