Series 2 is the best series of Red Dwarf. This might be a controversial opinion, but does anyone else agree?

For series 2, they tightened up what they had with series 1, and really perfected the formula. There's a brilliant character focus in series 2. You feel the bleakness of their predicament, and the comedy flows from the boredom and desperation of their situation. Rimmer is both tragic and sympathetic, and there are loads of poignant moments between him and Lister, among all the comedy. Lister has real humanity, rather just just being a slob. Holly and the Cat are also both on form - and Queeg is a highlight episode.

Series 2 builds on the bleakness series 1 - that sense of being marooned in a desolate universe, but also has the characters going off-ship more, adding some variation. I also love the low-budget feel and the focus on dialogue over action.

Don't get me wrong - I love the later series too, and series 3 and 5 are particularly high quality, with loads of standout episodes. Series 10 onwards have also been decent The only weaker installments are 7, 8 and Back to Earth.

I'm interested to know if there are other Series 2 superfans in the Red Dwarf community. Or maybe you think I'm wrong! Interested to hear.
