Authors that don’t use Quotation Marks
Recently, I read Herscht 07769 by László Krasznahorkai, and although I’ve read other books by Krasznahorkai, this time the omission of quotation marks was something that I kept thinking about as something that I found contributed to how much I enjoyed the novel and as something that had clear purpose in use.
Does anyone have any recommendations for books and/or authors that don’t use quotation marks?
For some reason I feel like I sort of prefer the lack of quotation marks, and I’d like to read some more books that do this. I remember Blood Meridian by Cormac McCarthy used this technique as well; although, I think I prefer the way Krasznahorkai combined the omission of quotation marks with a lack of line breaks.
Also, bonus: what is the earliest instance you know of an author doing this in a novel? I’m drawing a blank trying to think of more authors; although, to be honest, I don’t think I’ve read widely enough to know this sort of stuff.
Thanks.
