PART 2: I Sold My Entire Brilliant Stars Investment for sets that'll move faster: My Investing Strategy
I used to be the Pokemon Investor that would buy some of everything, but holding onto $4k~ of Brilliant Stars since release (2/25/22) taught me some invaluable investing lessons.
(Part 1 Post: https://www.reddit.com/r/PokeInvesting/s/yPeLZURssD
I have ~$50k with 136% returns on tcg player(holding mainly evolving skies and Lost Origin from S&S) This post is about setting up a selling inventory for sustainable investing, while keeping product you want to hold onto. )
My Investing: Philosophy
- Not all sets are created equal!
(will be using the thumbnail image as an example)
- As you can see in my thumbnail, throughout each Pokemon era, Pokemon sets grow in price un-proportionately.
- In the case for the Sun and Moon Era: My Investment Threshold would be from the Lost Thunder Booster Box($701) to the high of Team UP($3K).
- I am aiming to now limit my Investment Threshold, as an example Cosmic Eclipse and Team Up Booster Box type investments in every Era.
2) Money and Space is Finite!
(will be using the thumbnail image as an example)
- Money: If we are looking to maximize our investments, and we can buy each set at retail; wouldn't it make more sense to use our money($1,200) on sets like Cosmic and Team Up, rather than splitting up the same investment amount($1,200) with slower performing sets like crimson invasion, Burning Shadows, Guardians Rising, and Forbidden Light?
- Space: I stopped buying collecting boxes, ETBs(of sets that have BB), and reduced my investments to product that offer more pack/space(of course Pokemon Center Etbs for both):
Sets with Booster Boxes: Booster Box Cases & 144ct Blister Cases(The prices of these 2 cases rise proportionately)
Sets without Booster Boxes: ETBs, Booster Bundles,(Binder Collections for 151 and Prismatic are good as well).
I wanted to find a sustainable way to invest into Pokemon while also saving for a home, future, etc.
My Investment Strategy:
- I sold 2 Brilliant Stars Booster Box Cases for around $2,000 when Paldea Evolved came out.
- Purchased 2 Booster Box Case($650 each) + 2 Blister Case ($400 each)
- Will set aside half to be my Selling Inventory(1 BB Case + 1 Blister Case) I will wait until my Paldea Evolved BB Case grows to (at least) x2 the cost of a Booster Box Case.
- The next Booster Box Case set I want to Invest in, I will sell 1 Paldea Evolved Booster Box Case(for this example lets say $1,200-$1,300)
- Will buy at least 2 Booster Box Case(of the new set I want to Invest in) *with the Paldea Booster Box Case I sold*
- I will then repeat the process with this new set
Notes:
- I still have the Blister Case to sell(they most proportionately in price as the Booster Box Case)
- I will still have 1 Booster Box Case and 1 Blister Case to hold in my personal collection.
- If I sell the Booster Box case for 3x 4x the cost of a Booster Box Case, I can then use that to expand my Selling Inventory. (So instead on only selling 1 Booster Box case, I now have 2 or 3 I can sell to purchase future sets).
- This whole time I spend no additional money, and the collection will continue to grow as long as I pick higher performing sets.
- Lets say you have grown your investments to purchase 8 Booster Box Cases. You have 4 in your Selling Inventory.
- You can sell 2 BB Cases first (when the set doubles is the minimum) then save the other 2 BB Cases to sell at once they become 10 years or older.
- Final thought: if you use the thumbnail as the example. If you could invest $10k into any sets in the Sun and Moon Era set at retail would you spread your money a little throughout each set or would you rather invest it in the better performing sets like Team Up and Cosmic?
Thoughts?
