silly question

oh i'm sure it's been asked a million times before but, i do want to purchase a portal, and plan on it this week when i get paid. but, am i able to truly play it anywhere? i go to my girlfriend's house every other weekend and don't feel like toting my ps5 with me, but i wanna be able to play and whatnot. does the ps5 need to be turned on at home in rest mode? how does this all work? i don't know if sony has ever communicated this properly or if they have, i just misunderstood. thanks in advance!
