Interesting interaction between Cubone and Mankey

I was facing off a mankey with a cubone earlier and as I was going 2nd, I managed to “attack” first with cubone

Most people know that Cubone doesn’t really have an attack, but more of an ability to lower the opponent Pokémon attack by -20, as mentioned in the card description. And so when the opponent mankey attacked me the next turn, it logically dealt 30-20=10 damage to my cubone only. Mankey also has an ability where if it attacks, it deals 10 damage to itself. This is something you want to activate primeape +60 damage condition.

However this is where the odd part happened. The -20 inflicted by my cubone also applies to….the damage Mankey does to itself? As such when the Mankey attacked my cubone, it dealt only 0 damage to itself (as you can see in the picture), preventing the buff you get from Primeape.

This became moot next round anyway when I evolved to marowak ex and flipped a head, killing it. But it’s still a really neat mechanic that I’m unsure if intentional or not.
