Disability accomodations for clinical practicum
Does anyone have experience with requesting disability accomodations that may prevent you from performing procedures during clinical/practicum experiences?
I am blind in my left eye due to an optic disc coloboma. I am not comfortable performing surgical or invasive procedures that require visual acuity or depth perception without technology-assisted guides with/on an instrument. I have spent years in OT and have learned how to compensate, but am not comfortable with anything that requires absolute precision such as an lumbar puncture or virtually anything surgical. I think I’ll be fine with IV insertion, venipuncture, and ET tube placement since there are markers and guides to reference, but that’s about it. I do not feel comfortable with any sort of procedure that involves a risk of puncture or my hands/fingers blindly inside of a bodily cavity.
My practice interest is psych, so I do not to ever perform procedures upon licensure.
