Struggling to use nails to hang anything

Hello, I just moved into a 1916 craftsman bungalow and it’s definitely taken a minute to get used to. I’ve lived quite a few places and have never struggled with hanging shelves, photos, various items. At this house, when trying to hang anything with nails, they simply will not go into the wall past maybe a couple centimeters before springing or bouncing back. This has been in multiple places throughout the house. Even trying to use a push pin is near impossible.

Would this have to do with the age of the house or materials used? If so, any advice on how to hang things would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
