What's the deal with AI girlfriends?

I see a lot of advertising for them. Do men actually seek these virtual, non-human "relationships"? I just don't see the point. Do they believe in a genuine connection by talking to a bot? Why not just pay a prostitute or hire a real woman to talk instead?
