Does anyone else notice that when travelling abroad, when an American is asked where they’re from, they answer with the State or city. However, non Americans often answer with the country

Currently in Dominican Rebupblic and just heard someone tell a staff member he’s from Richmond VA. Do you really think any non-American would know where a city of 225K people is? Why not just say you’re American, or Canadian, or British, or German?

Edit: Qualifiers like state/province or a large city centre or very helpful. Just not sure a random suburb or small city is useful, especially when travelling internationally
