Question about suppressor calibers

Is it common to buy a suppressor that's say for a .30 caliber rifle and then use it on a .22 or .223? of course it would work but will it be as efficient in regards to noise suppression? If you had a choice should you get a suppressor that's rated for your caliber rather than one that's larger?
