Summiting Chimborazo (Acclimatization)
We are two men in our mid twenties (in good shape), that have decided to summit Chimborazo the upcoming weekend (with a professional guide). We have just been in Quito for almost one day and want to acclimate to ours best degree possible before the upcoming hike in 72hours. We have never summited peaks above 3k meter before, therefore, it is highly important that acclimatization process is done as professionally as possible. What are you guys experience with this in terms of Chimborazo or other high peaks. Thanks for serious feedback
UPDATE: We were successful in summiting the top of Chimbo in just 5,5hours from the dooms located at 5,3k, despite the low odds.
Acute mountain sickness (AMS): The headache was pretty intense once we arrived at the dooms(high camp) at 5,3k the first day of our 2 day summit. We were there for 6 hours before putting on our crampons and harness, just before leaving i chugged a 2L of coca tea. The tea helped a lot as the headache disappeared as we ascended. AMS was however present in that I was dizzy and wanted to throw up (i had refluxes but to a more subtle degree). As such, i could only get down small bites of an apple or snickers bar. I did however take salt chews intermittently which helped but required me to drink a lot of water.
It’s therefore possible to summit such a high peak with low levels of acclimatization, however, we are two fit men, 25 years old, which also helped a lot. I would definitely recommend anyone who want to summit Chimbo to acclimate more that just our one week in Salento, three days in Quito and 2x Rucu pichincha. It will make the trip more enjoyable and less exhausting.
