(NA) OBD1 or OBD2 for Cali?

Just curious what would help the car pass the smog tests more easy, I know OBD2 has more electrical points of failure but OBD1 has the sniffer test. I plan to keep it mostly stock but I have heard of some Miata's failing their smogs even stock due to old cats, stuck valves ETC.
