Update on Food Quality in Marin - Well it's BAD
Well, living here for a few months now has been great. It's beautiful, people are friendlier than I expected, and we are just generally happier living here. Everything is great except....the food.
Groceries:
Referring to my old post, I was excited to try the options
https://www.reddit.com/r/Marin/comments/13u08n8/lets_talk_marin_grocery_stores/
United Market did not live up to the hype. There were flies, it was dirty, and the produce section was small. Nugget market is a joke, it's a way worse version of Publix at 2x the price. Absolutely nothing special. The smaller Whole Foods in Mill Valley has produce that goes back very quickly. The fish delivery guy only does home deliveries on weekdays, but we work so it's a no go.
We've basically been relying on Good Earth for produce, fish, bread, and lamb. We rely on Safeway for organic air chilled chicken and non perishables. We order pesto, tikka masala, olive oil, sushi rice, and other specialty items from online retailers.
However, Good Earth hasn't been all that consistent, and it doesn't have the variety of fruits and vegetables I was hoping for in California. Plus avocados are so expensive. Safeway is just a frustration to enter. I went to the Farmer's market in Corte Madera and was shocked at the prices.
Restaurants:
Granted we have only ate out 3 times so far, I'm not impressed...at all. I'm actually quite disappointed.
-Picco is overpriced and terrible.
-Perry's has a great ambience under the redwoods, but the basic food is basically terrible. I have redwoods in my front yard, and I make a burger 1000x better.
-Sol Food is so overpriced. I feel bad that they have convinced this area that this is good Latin American food. It's not, please visit south Florida.
That's all I've tried, but looking at other menus everything is small portions, expensive, and not innovative / impressive.
Is the only way to go to SF for once a month dinner dates? No idea what to do for groceries, as I don't want to travel 1 hour each way to go to Berkeley Market on the weekends...I want to hike instead.
